Straight, sleek hair is in vogue and ceramic hair straighteners have become extremely popular. Find out why ceramic coated plates are better for your hair.

One of the greatest things about owning a ceramic hair straightener is that you can create straight, smooth salon-style hair at home without having to pay a lot of money every time you want it done at a hairdresser. Hair straighteners are all the hype right now, and lots of women are saying that ceramic hair straighteners are better than the cheaper versions, because they cause the least damage to the hair.

Ceramic hair straighteners cause little damage to hair

One of the reasons ceramic coated plates cause the least damage is that it makes the hot plates much smoother, preventing them from snagging your hair. The plates actually release negative charges, and neutralize positive charges, locking moisture into your hair.

The heat distribution is even throughout ceramic plates, as a result, the hair passes through it without getting scorched. The devices heat up very quickly (within seconds) and with many of the latest models, you can choose which temperature you want to use according to your hair type (150º to 230º C). The lower heat settings are suitable for finer hair, and a good product will feature a temperature lock function so you don't turn the heat up on your hair by accident. Because of its ability to heat up so quickly and maintain the same temperature throughout the time you are using it, it will straighten and smooth out your hair very quickly.

Good quality ceramic coated straighteners would have a ceramic layer applied to the plates under extreme heat, to seal the coating. The cheaper versions lack this quality and could badly damage your hair over time, because without the ceramic coating, the hot plates can snag and scorch the hair.

Types of ceramic hair straighteners

There are many versions of ceramic straighteners available on the market. There are mini straighteners, compact enough to fit into your handbag, and there are straighteners especially designed for styling wet hair (always use precaution though and never let electrical products get splashed or immersed in water). Some devices are especially built with rounded edges, so they can straighten and curl the hair just as well. There are even some with infused vitamins and pearl coatings.

There are many good quality straighteners available at reasonable prices, from $40 to $60. You will know a good ceramic straightener if the price is affordable and it keeps getting sold out because the demand is really high. However, if you can afford it, the highest quality products will be in the $60 to $150 price range.

Hair straightening tips

  • Always trim your hair every six weeks if you frequently use heat styling. This will minimize any heat damage to the ends.
  • If your hair is dry, use a good conditioning treatment every week to strengthen your hair and keep it healthy for ultimate results.
  • For fine hair, always use the lower temperature settings.
  • Make sure your hair is clean and free from any hair products before using your straightener to ensure maximum performance from your device. Sprays, oils and other hair products can be applied after you've finished straightening.
  • If your hair is normally coarse or dry, finishing off your straightening session by applying a little hair moisturizing oil to your hair will give it superb shine. Apply the oil evenly to your hair from the roots to the tips. Olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil is perfect for this. There are also a lot of good products available with a mixture of oils for maximum benefit.
